Use linux to clone current install image in the space reserved for old HP drive (plan to save that image in a slightly smaller partition) - reinstall using "unattended.txt" to put program files and "docs and settings" on separate partitions (Used Zeke's WIN95 cd for "qualifying media". THe old HP install qualifies, but HP provides only a "recovery" disk, no Windows disk. So, we're legally entitled, but technically prohibited from doing a "clean" install by the XP installer unless I have a windows CD - "qualifying media") - Partition map: C:\ 8192 MB NTFS ROOT 4096 MB ext3 KNOPPIX 1024 MB swap LINUX SWAP D:\ 1024 MB NTFS PAGING E:\ 2048 MB FAT32 TEMP F:\ 25600 MB NTFS PROG FILES G:\ free hog NTFS USER DATA H:\ 8192 MB FAT32 old hp disk - Install "Recovery console" from CD - Change registry keys so that recovery console does not require a password, and allow set commands so drives are writable HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole - Enable System Administration Tools in the start menu Start:Properties:Customize:Advanced - Install AIS Backup 2.0 Build 236 - Use AIS to create a recovery boot disk - Perform full backup to CD of initial install (moved CD/RW from new machine to HP temporarily) - Change Paging file Remove from Drive C Add 1000 MB paging file to Drive E (Needs 5M of free space or it complains) - turn off hibernation support to reduce size of the backup system disk image ==================================================================== ==================================================================== 03 April 2005 - Restored windows from inital install backup.... Consider moving entire "Documents and settings" tree over there By hacking the registry, but it does not go well. Trying to put it all back
